East Africa’s top photographer is more known for his stunning landscapes and portrait photography, but Javed’s interest in fashion photography is longstanding. By capturing Zanzibar’s fabulous style as expressed through clothing and modelling, Javed has found another way to express the beauty of Tanzania. he has started Fashion Week Zanzibar and for more information see www.fashionweekzanzibar.com. Javed hopes to both foster and nourish the burgeoning Tanzaniani fashion industry and create a festival of local creativity, joining up-and-coming and established artists, models and fashion lovers of all stripes.
Zanzibari-born fashion designer Farouque Abdela comes from a family of textile and embroidery designers, and continued the tradition by getting his training in London. Farouque has worked as a costume designer in film and theatre, a clothing designer (including for prolific clients such as Princess Diana and other international celebrities), and has shown his work all over the world, from Paris to Tokyo. Having moved back to Zanzibar in 2004, Farouque has fostered and encouraged the growth of the local fashion industry, empowering young aspiring designers with his knowledge and experiences.
Ally Rehmtullah has been designing in Dar es Salaam and has been a mover and shaker in the fashion industry for years. Basic in Upanga, his clothes are classic with an eccentric edge and with a feminine allure throughout every piece. He has shown his clothes throughout the country, at the Lady in Red show in Dar es Salaam and was named Best Designer in Tanzania in 2008.
Ally’s eye for unique, standout clothing is backed up by excellent technical skills from the Baum School of Art and Lehigh College in Pennsylvania. As a designer, creator and tailor, he understands that people want to look themselves while looking their best.
Vida Mahimbo is an upscale casual and contemporary Ready to wear fashion designer. After several seasons in New York & Italy where Vida was invited to launch her Vida Mahimbo's Brand she has returned again for the upcoming launch of her new collections.
Vida translates her Uhuru Brand "The African freedom" A brand that caters to the younger market that believes in casual and relaxed clothing for everyday wear. Kanga Jeans is a combination of Denim in African kanga Prints that provides a one of a kind exclusive style.
Vida has collected them, studied them and dealt with them as real works of art, cutting them and finally re-assembling them. They proudly wrap a body without constraints, as African women have always traditionally known how to do it.
